Eric Van der Vleuten wins the Bewely Homes Santa Stakes
David Broome, one of show jumping’s iconic figures, is the 2007 recipient of the Ryan’s Son Trophy, presented every year by John and Clare Whitaker to a major contributor to the sport.
David was a mainstay of the British team at the height of its success. He became a household name when he won Britain’s first individual Olympic medal, bronze, at the 1960 Olympics on Sunsalve, for which he was voted BBC Sports Personality of the Year.
He represented Britain at five Olympic Games (1960, 1964, 1968, 1972 and 1988) winning individual bronze medals in 1960 (Sunsalve) and 1968 (Mister Softee). He was voted the BBC Sports Personality of the Year in 1960. Broome was individual European champion in 1961 (Sunsalve), 1967 and 1969 (Mister Softee) and Won team gold (Philco) in the world championships in 1978. His last major team championship was at the 1991 European winning team silver (Lannegan).
David Won the King George V Gold Cup six times with six different horses, a record yet to be equalled.
He was World Champion in 1970 on Beethoven and was associated with great horses like Mr Softee and Philco.
David is still active in the administration of the sport.
John Whitaker has qualified for the Mitsubishi Ride and Drive final to win a car on Monday night with victory on Lactic in the second heat. He is also on target to retain his 2006 title of Leading Rider of Show.
Markus Fuchs is also in contention, along with Dutchman Eric Van der Vleuten whose purple patch continued with another facile win, in the Santa Stakes on Pitareusa. Ireland’s Jessica Kurten was second on Quibell.
Eric emerged best from a dramatic four-horse jump-off in which Danish rider Linnea Ericsson and her horse Pero-Z Hillock crashed through the penultimate fence and Franke Sloothaak’s Legurio stopped abruptly at the very last fence.
