Garden State Horse Show Announces 56th Annual Event

March 8, 2007, AUGUSTA, New Jersey- Now in its 56th year, the Garden State Horse Show just keeps getting better and better. New Jersey’s largest horse show, Garden State, runs at the Sussex County Fairgrounds from May 9-13, 2007, offering a full array of hunter and equitation divisions – from beginner classes to AA rated. But it is the management of all the classes and rings that makes the show such a hit with exhibitors and spectators alike.

Over the past few years the fairgrounds has basically been redesigned to accommodate the Garden State Horse Show (GSHS). When several years ago it became apparent that the show was outgrowing the facility, GSHS made a huge financial commitment by doubling the number of rings.

“The entries were growing every year and we kept finishing up [the show day] later and later,” says Tim Cleary, horse show manager. According to Cleary, the horse show committee was determined to keep the exhibitors, many of whom return to the show year after year, happy. Not only does the showgrounds now have a total of eight rings, but exhibitors are very pleased with the ample size and quality footing in all the rings.

The show committee’s next step, which was key to Garden State’s continued success and popularity, was to organize the schedule into two areas. The main showgrounds which includes two oversize hunter rings and a Grand Prix ring, is the site of all the AA divisions and big jumper classes. The $50,000 Junior Essex Troop Grand Prix, which consistently attracts some of the country’s best riders is featured on Saturday afternoon, May 12. Just 1,000 yards away, the show annex boasts 5 rings, one new this year, which comfortably handle the numerous unrated divisions for every level horse and rider.

“It’s like a local show up top [the annex] and a big show down below,” explains Cleary. He has received lots of positive feedback since organizing the show into two areas.

Another point on which GSHS prides itself is the show’s officials. Some of the most sought after judges in the country, including Thom Brede, Patricia Byrne, William Ellis, Barry Lobel, Donna Martin, Mindy Minetto, Patrick Rodes, and James Zulia, will be officiating at GSHS this year.

When it’s time to take a break from the action in the rings, Garden State features a fine assortment of shops situated between the two show areas. Tack shops, jewelry, handbags, clothing, speciality coffee, monogramming, and ice cream are among the shopping choices. Dining options are available both on and near the showgrounds.
