The FISE President, Ing. Cesar Croce, introduced to the press and to numerous other guests, the sponsors that gave their suppport to the organization of the event. This year, instead of the traditional carpet of green grass on the oval competition grounds, a brand new sand layer has been added . “It is not just sand”, President Croce added. “Using advanced technology, beginning with a PVC mattress, a silica sand layer coming from Alsace guarantees the best performances for horses and athletes”. It is, actually, an enhancement of the same technology used during the World Equestrian Games of Rome in 1998.
This project, strongly supported by both the FISE and FEI was aimed at improving the technical performance as well as preserving the horses well being. Landscape Architect Chiara Rutelli, has enhanced the visual impact of the new sand field by creating floral islands of geometric shapes in the typical “Italian Garden” style.
The best 8 teams in the World will competet here this week in the Samsung Super League.
As FISE Sport Director, Marco Danese mentioned, the Villa Borghese oval will have a number of famous riders already known to the Roman public. The British rider Nick Skelton, winner of last tears Grand Prix competition, and Germany’s Franke Sloothaak, a two time winner of the Grand Prix are both expected to be here.
The Italian Nations Cup team will be leaded by Roberto Arioldi, for the first time in the senior rider role, and will consist of Jerry Smit, Piergiorgio Bucci, Mark Porro, Chiara Arrighetti and Juan Carlos Garcia. “I hope I wisely choose those riders that were not already qualified for the Show - Arioldi declared - and I want to remind you that we will present a team made of 23 riders and not only the 5 riding in the Nations Cup”. Italy is competing as the host country team and is not part of the Samsung point competition.
