Forty Four Horse and Rider combinations came to the starting gate in this 1.5 meter competition against the clock (FEI Art. 238.2.1) , the first major competition at Rome. For the USA Lisa Silverman aboard Obelix R, Laura Kraut on Cedric, Beezie Madden riding Integrity, Todd Minikus with Olinda and Richard Spooner aboard Apache were all entered in the 13 obstacle Uliano Vezzani designed course that included two doubles at fence 4 and the finishing fence 11.
Four of the five Americans entered managed clear rides and Richard Spooner had but 8 faults. Todd Minikus the 22nd rider out of the starting gate, grabbed the lead riding Olinda with a clean ride in 55.60 seconds besting Rene Trebbel’s (GER) time by just 2/100’s of a second. That time held up until Markus Fuchs (SUI) the 43rd rider on the course clipped almost two seconds off of Minikus time with another clear ride aboard Loro Piana Royal Charmeur in 53.64. Germany’s Rene Trebbel finished 3rd.
Other US finishers were Laura Kraut in 7th, Lisa Silverman in 13th, Beezie Madden in 21st and Richard Spooner in 34th.
The riders all had good first impressions of the new footing.
“It’s excellent, very elastic, and it will be at the best till the last day,” Michael Whitaker said, “I only hope that the strong Italian sun reflection will not affect my ability on calculating distances”.
Rather short the German rider Franke Sloothaak comment: “It is real good, and the light reflection is not a problem, all European fields are like that”.
French rider Hubert Bourdy is excited about the new footing: “Piazza di Siena lost a little charm without the grass, but you’ve done a very good job…BRAVO!”
