Schaub Shines at Devon Opener

DEVON, Pa.—Maria Schaub of Rumson, N.J., no stranger to the winner’s circle, won her section of both the Washington International Equitation Classic – Jumper Phase and the Hunter Seat Medal on Thursday, May 24, the opening day of the 11 day show.

No other youngster won more than one class. The three classes, the Washington, the Medal and the the U.S. Equestrian Federation Show Jumping Talent Search, each were divided into three sections.

Kacey McCann, who first showed at the Devon Horse Show and Country Fair in the Leadline class, rode her Comanche to win the Washington – Jumper Phase.

“This is my first time winning a class at Devon,” said McCann, 17 of Palmyra, Pa.. “This is definitely the best show I’ve ever had here.”

“I did the Leadline here when I was tiny,” said McCann. “I never imagined I’d be here like this and winning.”

“I’ve had Comanche about a year now,” said McCann. “He’s only 7, so we got him really as a baby. He was a little fresh in the first class this morning. This is his first time at Devon, but he’s great, and he’s grown up so fast.”

Chelsea Moss, 17 of Medford, N.J., placed second in the U.S. Equestrian Federation Show Jumping Talent Search, the first class of the day, then added a third in the Medal and a fourth in the Washington to round out her best day ever at Devon.

“Devon is kind of like a Final, because everyone comes here,” said Moss to illustrate how difficult the competition is at the show.

“This is my third time showing here, and it’s by far the best I’ve ever done,” said Moss, who was holding her mount, Logan.

“Logan looks like he wants to go eat his supper,” said McCann of the big brown gelding who was shaking his head impatiently.

“Logan is amazing,” said Moss. “He never does anything naughty.”

All three events Moss rode in were equitation classes, in which the position and riding ability of the youngsters was judged.

Amelia McArdle of Barrington Hills, Ill., won the Talent Search, section A, Zazou Hoffman of Santa Monica, Calif., won section B and Addison Phillips of New York, N.Y., won section C.

Maggie McAlary of Amherst, N.H., won the Washington, section A.

Jennifer Waxman of Chagrin Falls, Ohio won the Medal, section A, and Jessica Springsteen of Colts Neck, N.J., won section C.

In the Hunter Pony Breeding division, Falling Moon Celebration, owned by Mrs. Thora B. Pollak and Anne T. Ferguson of Potomac, Md., and shown by Richard Taylor, won the Yearling, colts and geldings class and went on to win the Colt Championship and was named Best Young Pony.

Jack Rabbit, owned by John W. Kelly, Jr. of Middleburg, Va., and shown by Oliver Brown, second in the Yearlings, colts and geldings class, was awarded the Pennsylvania Pony Breeders Association Trophy for the highest scoring Pennsylvania bred pony.

The Equitation Championship will be awarded today after the final class in the section, and junior hunters and jumpers will take center stage in the Dixon Oval while pony hunters compete in the Gold Ring.
