Lauren Hough (USA) riding Casadora wins the $35,000 Spectra Energy Open II at Spruce Meadows

Ian Millar is victorious at the $25,000 Prairie Mines & Royalty Open I Cup

Sunny Skies !!!! The stars shone in the sunshine in the International Ring Thursday evening at the Spruce Meadows “National” Tournament’s Prairie Mines & Royalty Open Cup and the course proved extremely challenging for the 31 entries in the competition.

In an event laced with superstars only one rode clear within the time allowed. That rider was none other than Canadian icon Ian Millar with his gelding Redefin. They were the 23rd to go and they did so with height and speed, mastering the course that burdened all riders before and after.

Millar’s time was nearly six seconds faster than his closest competitor, fellow Canadian Chris Pratt. Pratt finished the night with one time fault and a second place ribbon.

The second event of the evening, the Spectra Energy Open (which also served as a Pan American Games team selection for Canada) American Lauren Hough and her mare Casadora improved on Hough’s success from the day before, finishing first after a two horse jump off. After her win Hough said, ‘It was an exciting jump off, my mare was super, I’m thrilled. The footing was great, the weather was fantastic and it’s always nice to win.”

Canadian Eric Lamaze who started off the Spruce Meadows “National” Tournament on a high note Wednesday kept that feeling alive by placing second in the Spectra Energy Cup. He joined Hough in the jump off with an end time fast enough for second place.

The leading Canadian on the quest for the Pan American games continues to be Jill Henselwood who placed fourth on the night and is one step closer to helping Canada qualify for an Olympic berth.
