In Finland, USA Developing Riders Win Nations Cup

USA won the FEI Nations Cup competition at Hamina Bastioni Horse Festival in Finland. Denmark took second place and Italy was third. Seven nations started in the 150 cms two round competition designed by Aki Ylänne (FIN). The riders in the winning team were Brianne Goutal / Onira, Sarah Segal / True Love, Eliza Shuford / Larentino and Georgina Bloomberg / Mila. The home team took fourth place.

We exceeded all our expectations .These girls are super determined and great riders. The Nations Cup competition was a bit too close for comfort with Denmark tight on our heels”, said the Chef d´Equipe for the United States, Melanie Smith Taylor.

In all, the American riders won a total of five classes including the Grand Prix and the Nations Cup.
The team riders are members of the young riders developing tour and continue directly to Drammen in Norway and then Falsterbo, Sweden.

“Team riding is very different, the pressure on the riders is completely different in a team competition and it is very important to get experience of team riding. Team riding is also a great confidence builder”, continued Melanie Smith Taylor.

Sarah Segal rode her first Nations Cup, Brianne Goutal and Eliza Shuford rode their second ones, Georgina Bloomberg was on the team for the fifth time. However, today was not Georgina’s lucky day. A passing horse kicked her in the knee in the warm-up for the morning class and she felt the pain throughout the day.

The prizes for Leading Rider, the Leading Lady and the best Finnish rider were all scooped by one person, Noora Pentti from Finland. She won one class and got two second places with her stallion Campari and rode a double clear in The Nations Cup with Evli Cagliostro.

The other double clears were produced by James Davenport / For Fun (GBR), Ingrid Laredal / Welten Z Enemaerke (NOR) Brianne Goutal / Onira (USA), Noora Pentti / Evli Cagliostro (FIN) and Giuseppe D Onofrio / Landzeu 2 (ITA).

The courses by Aki Ylanne (FIN) were praised by both the riders and the trainers. “Today we saw good sport and a very exciting competition. My team would have wanted the second round to be a bit bigger. However, the reason for not putting the fences up because there were no clear teams after the first round was acceptable. Throughout the week-end the courses were technical enough but fair to the horses in a setting that is very close to a indoor show. It is quite testing for horses that have been used to larger outdoor arenas at this time of the year to work indoor-like situation, said Achaz von Buchwald, who has been Chef d´Equipe for Denmark for two years now. The Hamina Bastion is an old fortress, the arena is covered and surrounded by ancient brick walls.
