USA Riders off to a good start at Rotterdam

Rotterdam Internaional Show JUmping got underway on Thursday. In the featured event of the day, the DuraVermeer Groep Prize: international jumping, table A 1.50, three of the eighteen that qualified for the jump off were Americans. McLain Ward and Quo Vadis had a clear ride and the best time in Round 1 at 75.77 seconds. Also qualifying were Laura Kraut and Anthem with a time of 81.08 and Beezie Madden and Select at 79.02.

In the jump off Mathijs Van Asten (NED), the second rider to return on Castella grabbed the early lead at 0, 41.32. Laura Kraut was the first American to return but had a rail in 41.69. Ellen Whitaker (GBR) made a run at Van Asten with a clear ride but fell short by more than a second in 42.36.

Beezie Madden was the next American and a clear ride aboard Select in 42.84 moved her into 4th place for the moment. Maikel Van Der Vleuten (NED), the third to last rider to go tripped the timer on Audi’s Naomie at 41.32 putting him in a tie for first. Malin Baryard-Johnsson (SWE) could not match the time leaving just McLain Ward to go. He beat the time at 40.10 but a rail cost him the vistory and a 13th place finish.

Earlier in the day, Beezie Madden and Danny Boy won the opening class at Rotterdam, the Aon Prize, a Table A with Jumpoff (Art. 238.2.2) at 1.30/1.35 meter. Thrity-eight horse and rider combinations came to the starting gate in this competition for young horses.

Beezie Madden, the twentieth rider out of the starting gate, had a strong clear ride aboard Danny Boy and claimed victory by 4/100ths of a second over Switzerland’s Werner Muff on Quax II
