Jumping Millars Can’t Be Stopped

BROMONT, QUEBEC For the second consecutive day, Amy Millar, of Perth, Ontario won the feature competition at the Bromont International show jumping tournament. 30-year-old Millar and her 32-year-old brother, Jonathon, have been on an unprecedented winning streak for the last six weeks.

Today’s victory in the $20,000 Cheval Blanc Speed Derby left no room for error. In a rare show jumping outcome, Millar tied to 1/100th of a second for the victory. In an even more unusual twist, the dual winners both had refusals. Jump-offs are rare in speed competition and, after some deliberation, it was decided to call it a tie.

Millar’s co-winner was Hyde Moffatt, of Brantford, Ontario, on Ting Tin, who made a valiant attempt to stop the Millar winning streak, stopping the clock at 151.9. Last to compete, Millar had the identical outcome as Moffatt, also having a refusal and equalling his time. The winners were more than three seconds faster than their closest rival, Quebecer Billy Derouet on Jezabel, who logged a time of 155.02.

G Force is a 9-year-old Dutch-bred gelding with whom Millar has had considerable success against the clock. She first rode him as a “catch ride” in Florida in March, when his owner, who was also his usual rider, had to go home for a week. That first ride resulted in a second-place finish against a large international field, with only U.S. Olympian Laura Kraut faster. Millar kept the ride and has continued to have success with him. G Force is owned by Victoria Smith, the same owner Millar won for yesterday on Costa Rica Z.

“Tomorrow I’m going for a hat trick”, Millar said, looking ahead to Sunday’s $60,000 BonjourQuebec.com Grand Prix.

The sister and brother show jumping duo, whose father is Canada’s most decorated show jumper, are now in the second-last week of the Quebec summer show jumping circuit that began in Ste-Justine-de-Newton in mid-June. Both Amy and Jonathon have logged grand prix wins, open welcome stake wins, as well as a modified grand prix win and now a speed derby win for Amy.
