The British government has confirmed an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in a farm near Guilford in the county of Surrey in the South East of England. This is the first time that the United Kingdom has been hit by the disease since 2001.
A 3-mile exclusion zone has been thrown around the farm. A national ban has been imposed on the movement of all cattle, sheep and pigs. For the moment, horses are not included in the movement restrictions.
The shows scheduled for the weekend in the UK – CEI 3* Euston Park and the Festival of British Eventing at Gatcombe Park – are running as planned. Next week’s Royal Dublin Horse Show (8- 12 August) in Ireland will not be affected.
The FEI is closely monitoring the situation in cooperation with the relevant veterinary authorities and will issue updates as they become available.
