Callie Bass and Zorro’s Precision MBA Unmask Their Talents in High AO/Junior Jumper Classic at Kentucky Summer Horse Show

Cara Cheska and Game Twist, Megan Haag and Mr. Nobody Only Others to Make Jump-off

Lexington, KY-August 5, 2007-As the weekend drew to a close, Callie Bass and Zorro’s Precision MBA carved their names on the wall of fame of the Kentucky Summer Horse Shows. Against a field of 19 other horse and rider combinations, Bass rode to the top position in the High AO/Junior Jumper Classic to tie for the division championship.

Ken Krome of Westminster, MD, designed the final course in the Johnson Arena for the week, making the track long and technical. Steady lines and a triple-combination were the bunkers in his design, allowing only three of 20 rides to return to the second round. The jump-off consisted of an oxer built on the edge of the ring to a tight right hand roll-back to a double combination. Riders then had to gallop across the arena to a vertical before a tight left-hand turn to a triple-bar. The final leg of the course was a right-hand turn to obstacle ‘c’ of the triple-combination continuing to a final oxer towards home.

Megan Haag and Mr. Nobody were first to challenge the short course and went clear until the penultimate obstacle to cross the timers in 40.008 seconds. Cara Cheska followed Haag’s attempt with Game Twist, completing the course in a rapid 38.978 seconds and clear. With Cheska leading the class with both a clear and fast score, Bass had to cut to the heart of the competition with the sword of Precision. As her trainer, Chris Kappler, encouraged her from start to finish, Bass piloted Zorro to capture the blue with the fastest time of 36.698 seconds.

Bass commented on Krome’s track, saying that a set plan going into the first-round made for a successful trip. “There were a couple of spots that I was worried about, like jumping out of the lines because they were very steady. Overall, it was pretty straight forward and rode like we walked it.”

Bass, from Houston, Texas, praises her mount for his talent and reliability. “I’ve had him for about a year now. He’s really cool because he really takes care of me. Basically, I just try and stay out of his way.” She also emphasized that Zorro was “really good” on Friday when they finished second in the High AO/Junior Jumper class. “He felt great. He wasn’t too fresh, so he wasn’t pulling me through the jumps. But he was still enough horse that we could go to the jump-off and be fast.”

Bass’s first and second place ribbons enabled her to share the championships honors with Cara Cheska and Game Twist, who captured the necessary blue ribbon on Saturday in the High class. “It’s really exciting and feels really good to be champion,” Bass grinned.

Bass is a seasoned veteran of the Kentucky Horse Shows and plans to return in the many years to come. “I really like it here, it’s a nice show. I’ve been coming here since I was doing the junior hunters and equitation.”

The Kentucky Summer Horse Show wrapped up today at the picturesque Kentucky Horse Park. The Kentucky Summer Classic will be held next week from August 8-12.
