Team Netherlands goes clear on Day Three to take Team Gold at the FEI European Championships

Germany gets the Silver and Great Britain has the Bronze

Christina Liebherr (SUI) remains in first place Individually with another clear ride

Although Team Germany had the lead going into today’s final competition, the home side’s lead was in immediate danger when Marcus Ehning retired as Noltes Küchengirl slammed on the brakes again. Then Christian Ahlman’s Coster hit the oxer at Fence 8 for 4 faults and the Gold just slipped away.

For the Netherlands, Vincent Voorn went clear. He was followed by Jeroen Dubbledam who also went clear and when Albert Zoer, the third Dutchman managed another faultfree round, it was all over for Germany, and the Netherlands team added European gold to the world team title that they won last year.

The British finished in third place ending a nine-year medal drought. With clears from Ellen Whitaker and her uncle John, the team anchorman, the Brits overtook Switzerland, who had two five-fault rounds, and claimed the Bronze aws well as a trip to the 2008 Olympics.

“It’s fantastic,” said chef d’equipe Derek Ricketts. “They all did a superb job and totally deserve it. We wanted the Olympic qualification, but to top it up with a medal is something else.”

Sweden and Norway also qualify for Hong Kong, but Italy, Spain and Belgium will miss out.

Christina Liebherr (SUI) remains in first place Individually with another clear ride

In the Individual Medal Competition, Switzerland’s Christina Liebherr and L.B. No Mercy managed their third clear in as many days. Less than a rail separates the top 7 riders, so it is still anybody’s competition to win.

Germany’s Ludger Beerbaum is in second followed by team mate Meredith Michaels Beerbaum. The Netherlands sits in 4th and 5th with Vincent Voorn and Jeroen Dubbledam holding those positions.

The championship resumes with two competitions on Sunday. Saturday there are two Grand Prix competitions.
