Maclay regional win finally launches Maria Schaub to the top spot with competition year nearly coming to a close
Cazenovia, NY, October 16, 2007: She’s trailed the successful and consistent Maggie McAlary all year in the Bates Equitation Ranking, but as McAlary’s points age from her stunning 2006 season, Holmdel, New Jersey’s Maria Schaub has recently made up some ground. It was her win in the Region 2 qualifying competition for the National Horse Show ASPCA Maclay Championship at the Syracuse Invitational Sporthorse Tournament that propelled her into the top spot. This is the second Region 2 win for Schaub. The first was in 2005, and she finished second in the same event last year. Schaub and her mount I Toon have been accumulating several late-season equitation laurels, including a win in the Monarch International SCM North American Equitation Championship at Capital Challenge and in the Washington International Horse Show Equitation Finals. Schaub’s recent success, added to her Regionals win, make her ranking hard to beat since the winner of the Bates Saddles Year End rider and trainer awards are based on the standings as of November 2, 2007. Schaub’s closest competitor, trailing just 49 points behind, is Kimberly McCormack. New Hampshire’s Maggie McAlary is still in the top three, despite the fact that she is ineligible to compete in some equitation events because she has already won the championships. Two more New Jersey girls are on McAlary’s heels, Brittany Hurst and Jessica Springsteen hold fourth and fifth place respectively.
