Conyers, GA –Owner-rider Terry Brown of Showcase, Ltd. based in Canton, GA partnered with her 11 year-old Hanoverian gelding Sequel continue their 2006 winning season with the Championship in the Regular Working Hunter division sponsored by Southern States-Triple Crown. The pair was last year’s USEF Grand National Horse of the Year Champions in this division and appears to be on track for top honors again.
“I’m happy that the boys performed well on their home turf,” Brown began when asked her thoughts on showing in Conyers again, “We’re looking forward to next week’s Horses Helping Horses Hunter Classic benefiting Old Friends Equine Retirement. Sequel has pledged 50% of his winnings to the charity and we’re hoping some of the other competitors will take the challenge.” She added. Terry and Sequel took the blue ribbon in all their over fence and flat classes for during this week of competition. “Sequel came through for me like he usually does,” a smiling Terry spoke of her partner.
A second Championship for Brown this week was in the 1st Year Green Working division with Fun One, owned by Show Hunter Investments. In the 2nd Year Green Working top call went to Elizabeth Towell riding Danube for owner Wyndmont, Inc, while Michael Dorman onboard From Day One for owner Bonnie Lee Mandicdh claimed the Conformation Hunter Championship. Primetime with Daniel Geitner in the irons for owner Anna Wells Sharp became week one’s Baby Green division Champions.
In the Grand Prix arena owner-rider Sergio Campos of Longwood, Florida and Shakira Do Jacare a 9-year-old Brazilian mare bred at his family’s home in Brazil beat out a field of 35 nationally and internationally ranked competitors to win this week’s Lucky Sevens Welcome Stake presented by The Plaid Horse Magazine. Course designer Michel Vaillancourt’s prepared a 15-effort layout of sweeping turns and big spreads with a generous time allowance of 84 seconds. “It was perfect, just perfect for this level of rider.” Vaillancourt commented, “With such a strong field of exhibitors for this class it was a great chance to prep them for the Grand Prix this weekend.”
Campos a native of Brazil was actually a professional bull rider for several years before entering the equestrian field full time. “I did ride bulls professionally for about 6 years but gave it up almost 4 years ago. My goal from the childhood remains the same; to one day make the Olympic team. I gave up school, home, and bulls” a smiling Sergio went on to say, “to come here (the US) to further that dream. I eat, drink, and sleep it still. I’m hoping to take two down to Brazil next year for qualifying in the Pan Am Games.” His immediate plans include the Grand Prix this weekend as well as, “I’d love to win the Horses Helping Horses Grand Prix next week. I came close last year! It’s a wonderful charity and I’m happy to be contributing to it.”
Shakira and Sergio went double clear with a first round time of 74.532 seconds and a very fast 36.410 seconds in the jump off. Second place honors went to Arriscraft Soleil piloted by Aaron Vale for owner Angelstone Farm with a second round time of 40.430. Mauro Atzeri riding Cokio-Vitz for owner Gregory Gingery took third place with a time of 43.115. Aaron Vale this time on board Waldi for owner Millstream Inc placed fourth in a time of 43.993 seconds and finishing up the top five was Eventual with owner-rider Jack Harden Towell in a time of 44.482 seconds and 4 faults.
Friday, June 16th will see the return of the popular $2500 Trainers Equitation Medal class presented by Rolling Acres Farm. The evening begins at 6PM with an exhibitors party sponsored by Merial makers of UlcerGard under the covered arena of the Georgia International Horse Park followed by the always entertaining Trainers class.
The Atlanta Summer Classics continue through June 25th with showing taking place Wednesday through Sunday each week. Classes begin daily at 8AM until approximately 4:30PM and the public is invited. Admission is free and at 7PM each Saturday evening will host an exciting $25,000 Grand Prix jumper event.
