COLTS NECK, NJ – Over 500 spectators had lunch, and sought shelter from the sun, under a ringside tent at the Wachovia Jumper Classic at Beacon Hill Show Stables. The talent that the fourth annual event attracted was, as good as it gets. Many of the top names on the USEF Computer List were in attendance, to compete in the $50,000 Budweiser Grand Prix.
The day started with the $15,000 Junior Amateur Owner Grand Prix Table II sec.2 (a) was won by Tuesday, ridden by Allyson Hawkes, from Jersey City, New Jersey. Tuesday is a ten year old Dutch mare, by Ahorn. “She is an unusual mix of carefulness and bravery,” Hawkes said. “She is the only horse that I have ever purchased without even sitting on. Chris Kappler found her for me Europe, which is why I put up with his bad jokes,” she laughed.
The $10,000 NAL Beacon Hill Speed Derby Table II sec.2 (a) was the second class of the day. 21 riders attempted to jump the course constructed mostly from natural obstacles. The Grob, Hedge, Bank, Double Liverpool’s and Open Water jumps were all used. Out of 21 starters, only 14 completed the course. The competitive class was won by Julia Du Brio, ridden by Olympic Medalist, Peter Leone. Julia Du Brio is a nine year old bay mare by Jalisco, who was imported in January of 2006. “Julia Du Brio had a conservative Palm Beach circuit, being ridden by her owner, Alexia Simonard,” Leone said. “Alexia encouraged me to try her over bigger jumps after Florida, and I found her really fun to ride. She has a great heart and is fearless,” Leone smiled.
The featured event started at 3:30pm, in the heat of the day. The course for the $50,000 Budweiser Grand Prix was designed by Richard Jeffery, of Bournemouth, England. There were 14 numbered fences and an Open Water Jump, in the Table II .sec.2 (a) Time First Jump-Off competition.
Out of 34 starters, five went clean in the first round, and two had a single time fault. Peter Leone was the first to go clear, with Icon, owned by the Lionshare Farm, Inc. Five rounds later, Laura Chapot went clean on Little Big Man. Margie Engle, who was twentieth in the order, went clear on Hidden Creek’s Oscar, owned by the Hidden Creek Farm. Following that, Laura Chapot qualified her second horse, Samantha, and Anne Kursinski was the final clear trip, on Roxana 112, owned by Scott Hakim.
The jump-off was off to a quick start, with a four fault round, and a time of 37.581 seconds, from Icon and Leone. Chapot, on Little Big Man, and Engle on Hidden Creek’s Oscar, both had four fault jump-off scores, and were slower than Leone. Chapot had a second chance on Samantha, and put in a clear round with a speedy time of 38.689 seconds to take the lead. On this day however, the last proved to be the best, as Roxana 112, ridden by Kursinski, went clear in a time of 37.229 seconds for the win.
Following her victory, Kursinski had high praise for the show. “Roxana jumped well here because she loves the conditions at this show. The footing is fabulous, and the courses have been great,” she said. “Last week, Katie Prudent beat me in the Upperville Grand Prix, because I went too slow to the first fence,” Kursinski recalled. “I was not going to make that mistake twice. I really wanted to win this week, and had a good feeling about it going in.”
