Swiss celebrate a 1-2 finish in the Longines Grand Prix of St. Gallen

For the first time since 1909, the home team horsemen were able to finish with a 1-2 victory. Before 20,000 enthusiastic spectators, Markus Fuchs on Nirmette finished 31-hundredths seconds faster than fellow temmate Christina Liebherr on No Mercy to capture the Longines Grand Prix of Switzerland.

Great Britain’s Michael Whitaker, who had won two years ago at St. Gallen finished third. Beat Mändli also flawless in the final round finished fourth making it three out of four for Switzerland.

Beezie Madden riding Authentic who was clear in Round 1 pciked up 4 fault in Round 2 and gave the Americans their highest finish at in 6th place.

On Friday in the Samsung Nations Cup, Switzerland finished a disappointing fifth, so todays win in the Longines Grand Prix was a reason for Fuchs to celebrate. Seven years ago Markus on Tinka’s Boy won the Grand Prix, but that event was in Lucerne.

The 55-year-old Fuchs has who hails from St. Gallen has won his fourth Grand Prix of he season with his mare. Nirmette triumphed in January in the CSI in Zurich as well as in Mannheim and Hamburg.

Ten of the 51 starting horse/rider combinations completed the difficult, but fairly conceived master course of course designer Rolf Lüdi/Werner Wüthrich with flawless rides. Five of those riders made it double clears in Round 2.
