Amy Millar Keeps Family Streak Alive

BROMONT, QUEBEC On the same grounds where her father jumped in the 1976 Olympics, Amy Millar, of Perth, Ontario, continued the family’s summer of ‘07 winning streak.

Thirty-three entries entered the $15,000 Open Welcome Stake at the two-week Bromont International show jumping tournament. But, the field was soon reduced due to inclement weather. “The skies opened up” Millar said.

But she was not deterred and the conditions didn’t bother Millar or her mount, Costa Rica Z. They were one of only two rider/horse combinations to jump fault-free and they defeated a veteran American in the tie-breaker against the clock. U.S. team veteran from the ’80s, Peter Leone, who is currently making a comeback, settled for second behind Millar.

Costa Rica Z is a 12-year-old German-bred mare owned by Victoria Smith.

The second generation Millar riders have dominated the Quebec summer show jumping circuit, where 30-year-old Amy and 32-year old Jonathon have both logged multiple victories and have even jumped-off for wins against each other and against their father. The Quebec tour continues in Bromont until next week, at the site of the equestrian events of the 1976 Olympic Games.

The oldest member of “Team Millar”, 60-year-old Ian Millar, is en route to Rio de Janeiro to compete in the Pan American Games, where he will be the oldest Canadian athlete. Show jumping competition there begins on the 26th, with team and individual medals awarded on the 27th and 29th, respectively.
