Laura Kraut finishes tied for 7th aboard Anthem
It came down to a three way jump off between Germany’s Christian Ahlmann, Frances Roger-Yves Bost and the USA’s Beezie Madden. Roger-Yves Bost was first to go in the jump off aboard Ideal De La Loge. He navigated the early course cleanly but a late rail cost him 4 faults as he tripped the timer in 54.45.
“At the beginning my horse slipped a bit so I had to ride more carefully in order to remain clear. Then unfortunately I picked up four faults. I have been riding this horse since he was a five-year-old. I am very fond of him, because he is very courageous and good,” commented the French rider Roger-Yves Bost.
Christian Ahlmann was next to go and again had no problem with the early part of the course. Although he beat the time and crossed the finish in 52.88, two late rails cost him 8 faults. “I desperately wanted to win the Grand Prix of Aachen and knew that I would have to jump a speedy round, because my fellow competitor Beezie Madden’s horse Authentic, is one of the fastest in the world. So, I decided to risk all I could, which proved to be too much in the end,” said the 32-year-old rider.
Beezie was the final rider. Her focus was on a clean ride which would give her the Grand Prix. As always, Authentic was magnificent and the two managed the course without fault to secure the win.
“Winning here is a super victory for me, that I definitely wanted to add to my list of successful results. It was very exciting riding here. At the start I risked more and rode faster, but towards the end I was able to slow the pace down because my aim was to jump clear,” reported Beezie Madden.
Beezie is the first American to win the Aachen Grand Prix since Anne Kursinski rode Starman to victory in 1991. She also joins the likes of Col. Wing aboard Totila who was the first American to win the Grand Prix in 1948, George Morris who won in 1960 aboard Night Owl and Neal Shapiro who won it in 1966 aboard Jacks or Better and again in 1971 riding Sloopy.
