Lauren Hunkin Logs First Grand Prix Victory
June 25, 2025
STE. JUSTINE DE NEWTON, QUEBEC, JUNE 22, 2025 Grand prix show jumping up-and-comer Lauren Hunkin, of Caledon, Ontario, logged to her first grand prix win on Sunday in Ste. Justine de Newton, Quebec. The victory came aboard Larry in the $25,000 grand prix at the Beaulieu Summer Classic. Hunkin and Larry were the fastest clean in the jump-off by a 1.5 second margin over Quebec’s own Veronique Mailloux on Aramisse des Pins. Another Quebecer, former Canadian Champion Laurie Bucci, had a more cautious time, but left all the jumps standing, on Lalelu to finish third. Hunkin also finished sixth on her other mount, Orleans. The starting field included 24 rider/horse combinations
Twenty-eight-year-old Hunkin has spent the last several years training full-time with Canadian show jumping legend Ian Millar in Perth, Ontario.
Hunkin has been working patiently towards her first grand prix win, finishing a close second behind Amy Millar in a $75,000 World Cup Qualifier last fall. She also finished second in the overall standings of the eastern conference of the Kubota Cup national show jumping series in 2006. “It feels pretty fantastic”, Hunkin said of her first grand prix win, “It’s taken a long time to get here.”
Hunkin acquired Larry, a 10-year-old German-bred gelding, during the 2007 winter series in Wellington, Florida. He was ridden there by Jackson Reed-Stephenson, of Great Britain.
