At the FEI World Cup 2006, Kent Farrington and Madison win the KL Grand Prix

Kent Farrington and MadisonThe KL Grand Prix presented by MAS Kargo attracts a world class field on the Saturday night of the Kuala Lumpur World Cup Final show.

Young Charlotte Morse of Hong Kong gets them started. Riding the beautiful Westfalian stallion Lanceretto (Lancer x Grannus), she rides a fantastic round. Only the Terengganu Boat fence with the water tray beneath comes down for 4 penalties in a time of 77.39 secs.

If anyone thought the course might be easy seeing Charlotte’s relative success soon had that notion dispelled. Helena Gabrielsson and Aladdin had 24 penalties including a stop. Gunnar Klettenberg of Estonia had a stop with Terror on the way to a 10 faulter.

Even Marcus Ehning finally had a fence down with Cinderella. The World No. 1 and World Cup Final leader stepped up the pace after the Terengganu Boat fence came down to record a quick time of 68.09 secs.

USA hasn’t set this show on fire, and their poor luck continues. Margie Engle has a rail down with Hidden Creek’s Alibi in the middle section of the treble. Their round is quick though and they slot in behind Marcus in the standings.

Kent Farringdon looks to change USA’s fortunes. Madison is jumping very well today after being pulled out of last night’s 2nd World Cup Final class. The 10 year old KWPN gelding hasn’t had the best of trips to Kuala Lumpur, so it is very nice to see him jumping well. So well that they are the first pair to go clear!

The two Fins in these finals make their own impact. Noora Pentti almost makes it with Evli Cagliostro but for a brick off the Ocean Wall. Her compatriot Mikael Forsten goes one better with Melansa, who is also owned by Noora Pentti. It is a fantastic clear round by Mikael to force the jump-off.

Leopold van Asten shows his class and restores some pride in a quick 4 faulter in 68.40.

Michelle Barrera comes into the ring with Kayak van het Gravenhof. They have started the World Cup Final but tonight finish their World Cup show with the KL Grand Prix. The Filipina is accurate and jumping well, but Kayak is struggling slightly and it is 5 rails down for 20 faults.

Malaysia’s Syed Omar Amohdzar also starts the KL Grand Prix with Lui 24. He had a good round on Thursday but found last night’s 2nd World Cup Final class a little too much for the inexperienced Lui. They start the round well. Omar is using the turns to make space for Lui and giving him room to the fences. Lui is responding and they are clear through the Terengganu Boats and the treble. The crowd is jumping every fence with them. They make it safely though the Palm double and the tension is tangible with just two fences to go. The clear the KL World Cup Final fence and it is just the Masjid Jamek fence left. They move up to it but Lui but Lui just taps it out. The crowd lets out a collective “Ohhh” of disappointment, then rise to give their hometown boy a standing ovation.

Then four clear rounds come in succession. Norway’s Geir Gullikson has been having a super show with Clear Round’s than Party. They make it to the jump-off with an energetic, athletic performance. Iranian Ali Nilsforushan and Cellist II don’t travel as fast but they get the job done nonetheless. Then it is the turn of Russian Vladimir Beletskiy and Resonanz. Italian Juan Carlos Garcia makes it look easy with Markgraaf.

Markus Beerbaum can’t add to the jump-off list of six. Constantin goes well for him tonight, but the last part of the treble comes down. It is early enough for Markus to step up the pace to try to get into the money with a fairly quick round.

Charlotte Morse closes the 1st round with O’Jasper. They start very well. It is the 7th and 8th fences that come down as well as the last. They should not be disappointed with another good ride in this 1.60 m class.
The Jump-Off

American Kent Farringdon gives it everything he has with Madison. He starts fast. They get lucky at the 2nd as the top rail rolls but stays. They are attacking everything. They are lucky at the Masjid Jamek but it stays as well and Kent rides his luck. It’s a good gallop to the finish in 39.51 seconds. It’s a good time that will take some beating.

Mikael Forsten and Melansa have the third fence down and after that stay fairly quick but they know it is over for this Flying Finn.

Norwegian Geir Gullikson sets Clear Round than’s Party a good gallop. They are quick and the chase for Farrington’s time is on. They gallop all the way to the end and it looks close but it’s not to be as they stop the clock in 40.12 secs.

Iranian Ali Nilsforushan and Cellist III do their best but Cellist doesn’t really have the speed. They are clear though in 44.10 secs.

The Russian Vladimir Beletskiy and Rezonanz are naturally quick but they are more concerned with getting the clear round. They stay clean and come home in 42.37 secs.

Last to go Juan Carlos Garcia will give Farrington’s time a real test. Markgraaf has the quality and in Juan Carlos, a top pilot. They are quickly away from their fences but the 3rd, ironically the MAS Kargo fence, comes down. They know it is over for them in the MAS Kargo KL Grand Prix and ease up to finish with 4 faults in 42.11 secs.

Finally the Stars and Stripes gets raised in the Putra Stadium for Kent Farringdon and Madison.
