Ottawa, Ontario —Laurie Bucci of Mont St-Hilaire, QC was named the ProChaps ‘Athlete of the Month’ for November following her victory in the Canadian Show Jumping Championship at the Royal Horse Show held November 3-12 in Toronto, ON.
Riding Quidam’s Ramiro, a nine-year-old Holsteiner gelding owned by Claude Dufresne, Bucci won her first Canadian Show Jumping Championship title. Having placed sixth in the $15,000 Phase One speed competition on Friday night, Bucci returned to the Ricoh Coliseum on Saturday afternoon for the two-round $55,000 Phase Two.
As one of eight riders to go clear in the first round, Bucci returned for the second round where she faced such high caliber competitors as current leader Mario Deslauriers, defending champion Jill Henselwood, and eight-time Olympian Ian Millar. Once again, Bucci rose to the occasion, posting a quick and clear round to put the pressure on those who followed. One by one, those ahead of her in the standings faulted, and Bucci was catapulted into top spot.
“It was one of my biggest victories to date, I was very happy to have won,” commented Bucci, who is also currently tied for second position in the Canadian League World Cup standings. “Quidam’s Ramiro is still very young and it was his first time indoors so I never expected to win, especially against such tough competition.
“This is my first time being named Athlete of the Month, and I am very pleased about it,” continued Bucci. “It is such a nice honour.”
In recognition of her achievement, Bucci will receive a pair of state-of-the-art riding chaps, compliments of ProChaps.
