Millar and Star Power Win the Caledon National Grand Prix

May 24, 2025

Palgrave, Ontario, Canada - May 23, 2025 - Ian “Captain Canada” Millar and Star Power were the winners of the $50,000 Caledon National Grand Prix on the Victoria Day long weekend in Canada.

On a holiday weekend that felt more like July than May, Ian Millar and eleven other riders tacked Venezuelan, Leopoldo Palacios’, challenging course at the Caledon National, north of Toronto.

As riders walked the course, a number of lines were re-walked but none as much as the triple coming near the end of the course. This combination would prove to be the undoing of seven (7) entries, including veterans Yann Candele and Beth Underhill. The double following the open water rode well, but the skinny vertical at #9 would catch out a few.

Where the double (6a, b) is concerned, kudos must go to Candele. After he and Game Ready had a very dodgy moment at the water, Candele found himself riding on the buckle going towards the big double. Although he picked up faults at “a”, Candele calmly regrouped and finished the rest of the course clear in his signature, cool style. It was an impressive display.

Only three pairs moved forward to the jump off: Jill Henselwood with Bottom Line, Ainsley Vince with Frieda, and Ian Millar with his new ride, Star Power.

Bottom Line, with whom Henselwood won the $300,000 Lamborghini Grand Prix of the Desert at HITS Thermal earlier this year, posted the best time of the afternoon, but with 8 faults. Vince and Frieda, a warmblood mare by For Future, eased up on the pace but still took a costly rail. This left the door wide open to Millar and Star Power. The soon-to-be grandfather went for the slow clear and, in doing so, took the win.
