Dressage Canada and Equine Canada Announce Sanctioned Dressage Steward Clinics in 2009
February 2, 2026
Ottawa, ON — Dressage Canada and Equine Canada are pleased to announce the following sanctioned steward clinics for 2008.
Dates: March 7th 2009—General Stewards Clinic
March 8th, 2009— Dressage Stewards Clinic (Price includes General Stewards Clinic)
Location: Ontario Equestrian Federation (Board Room),
9120 Leslie Street, Suite 203, Richmond Hill, ON
Clinicians: Margaret Murdoch and Jan Stephens
This is a terrific opportunity for stewards, and those interested in becoming a steward, to take advantage of the two-day General Stewards Clinic and Dressage Stewards clinic. Participants can then use these clinics on their application to become an Equine Canada General Steward and an Equine Canada Dressage Steward. Attending these clinics is also a great way to learn more about competition rules from two of Canada’s most experienced stewards.
Margaret Murdoch (FEI Dressage and EC Senior Dressage Steward) was named in 2006 as Canada’s first FEI Dressage Specific Steward General. Murdoch, a well respected FEI Steward and Dressage Specific Steward in the Ontario region, has officiated at many CDI3* and CDI-W competitions over the years. Murdoch will bring her considerable experience to the table at the Steward Clinics in 2009.
Jan Stephens (Equine Canada Senior General Steward, Medium Dressage Steward and FEI Steward for Jumping, Eventing and Reining) has been a national steward since 1975 and an FEI jumping and eventing steward since 1999. In 2002, Stephens was elected chair of the national steward committee for Equine Canada. In 2007, she also became an FEI reining steward. Stephens has officiated at Spruce Meadows, the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair and the Rolex Kentucky CCI4*.
“Margaret and I are very pleased to offer both the General Clinic and the Dressage Clinic on the same weekend, ensuring that stewards have the opportunity to get both accreditations or upgrades at the same time,” noted Stephens, who is also the FEI Steward General for Canada for jumper, reining and eventing. “We really feel it is advantageous for participants enjoying the broad scope of stewarding including hunter/jumper, breed sports and dressage. We look forward to presenting a valuable educational opportunity for everyone.”
Stewards who wish to officiate at Equine Canada sanctioned Dressage competitions must be licensed dressage stewards. Applications for Dressage Steward Status can be downloaded from www.equinecanada.ca/dressage.
Dressage stewards due for updating or upgrading of their dressage steward status must attend both the general and dressage clinic to complete their updating/upgrading requirements.
All Officials are required to attend an updating clinic once every three years to maintain their status.

Old Friends Hits the Bourbon Trail. Louisville Benefit Announced.
February 2, 2026
February 2, 2026 – The Historic Seelbach Hilton in Louisville, KY, has announced the first ever “Old Friends Along the Kentucky Bourbon Trail” dinner and bourbon tasting to benefit the Thoroughbred Retirement Facility based in Georgetown, KY.
The inaugural event will begin at 6 p.m. on Saturday, February 28, at the hotel (500 South Fourth Street in downtown Louisville). Tickets are $100 per person, and the hotel is offering a reduced room rate of $75 for the night.
“This will be a great match of two of our state’s signature industries – bourbon and horses,” said Jon McFarland, the Seelbach’s general manager. “It’s going to be one of Louisville’s premiere events while helping such a dignified, worthy cause.”
Old Friends is currently home to more than 30 rescued or retired ex racehorses. Among the many champions are the great sprinter Ogygian, millionaire Awad, stakes winner Danthebluegrassman, and Eclipse winners Sunshine Forever and The Wicked North. Several off-the-track Thoroughbreds, recently retired from the Hunter-Jumper arena, are also among the residents.
“I can’t think of a better way to spend a night in Kentucky,” said Michael Blowen, President and Founder of Old Friends. “Great bourbon, unforgettable horse tales and a world-class hotel. And it all goes to help these great Kentucky athletes.”
The evening will include a live and silent auction. Equine art, horse racing memorabilia, vacation packages, and much more will be on the block.
Each guest will receive a commemorative Kentucky Bourbon Trail/Old Friends rocks glass from the Kentucky Distillers’ Association. The Kentucky Bourbon Trail links eight of the state’s legendary distilleries and is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year.
The evening begins in The Seelbach’s famous Rathskellar, the only surviving Rookwood-Pottery room in the world. Seven of Kentucky’s Master Distillers will be there to offer samples of the Commonwealth’s finest bourbon.
They are: Harlen Wheatley of Buffalo Trace; Jim Rutledge of Four Roses; Parker and Craig Beam of Heaven Hill; Fred Noe of Jim Beam; Kevin Smith of Maker’s Mark; Jimmy Russell of Wild Turkey and Chris Morris of Woodford Reserve.
Blowen, KDA President Eric Gregory, and Larry Johnson, the Seelbach’s celebrity historian, will all be on-hand to discuss the event and their respective Kentucky treasures.
Bourbon-inspired appetizers will be served, followed by a magnificent dinner in The Oakroom. The menu, prepared by Chef de Cuisine Nicole Walker, in the only AAA Five-Diamond restaurant in the region, will be a bourbon-inspired feast which will be followed by dessert and live auction in the Rathskellar. Bluegrass and other regional music will be played by Steve Cooley and Mike Shroeder.
