August 11, 2025
Parker, CO-August 11, 2008-More than Gold, Silver and Bronze Medals were awarded during the closing ceremonies of the 2008 CN North American Junior and Young Rider Championships at the Colorado Horse Park, Presented by Gotham North. The Championships gave out several special awards to recognize the style, spirit and sportsmanship displayed by select individuals.
The Championships are the premier equestrian event in North America for riders age 14-21. Run in a format similar to the Olympic Games, the Championships feature riders competing for team and individual Medals in the three Olympic disciplines of show jumping, dressage and eventing, as well as the western discipline of reining, which was added to the schedule for the first time this year.
The NAJYRC operates under the rules of the Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI), the international governing body for equestrian sport. It is the only FEI championship held annually in this country.
Each discipline honored one team or rider with a “Style Award.” The recipients, each of whom received bronze sculptures donated by Brian and Penny Ross in conjunction with Bel Cavallo Bronze, were selected for having exhibited style not only when mounted, but also in their manners and demeanor throughout the week. Winning the “Style Awards” were Bonita Strimby for eventing, who won “The Field” trophy; Hannah Selleck for show jumping, who won the “Baretta” trophy; Laura Noyes for dressage who won the “Dressage Trot” trophy; and Lacey A. Vernon for reining.
A longstanding award at the NAJYRC is the Captain Andrew B. de Szinay Memorial Sportsmanship Trophy, presented annually to the rider who best personifies the high standards and virtues of integrity, sportsmanship, honor, courage, team spirit, good temper and unselfishness. This year’s winner was dressage rider Mystere “Misty” Moyes of Region 9.
The Howard B. Simpson High Five Trophy was awarded jointly to Page Tredennick who volunteered as Exhibitor Director and Kristi Wysocki who volunteered as Coordinator for the dressage division. The High Five award, given to the volunteer(s) who best exemplifies Howard Simpson’s spirit of giving back to the sport he loves so much, honors Simpson, who not only served for so many years as NAJYRC Director at Tempel Farms, but also as a sponsor and a tireless volunteer. The encouragement he has always given to the athletes who work so hard to qualify for the Championships is an example to all.
The Caristo Cup, named in honor of Zone 2 chef d’equipe Ralph Caristo, was created in Caristo’s honor and is given each year to one chef d’equipe at the Championships who exhibits the same spirit of sportsmanship, horsemanship and enthusiasm that Caristo brings to his position. This year’s award was given to Matt Cyphert from Zone 7.
The Fiona Baan Memorial Trophy, presented annually to the dressage rider who earns the highest average percentage score from his or her team and individual rides, was given to Laura Noyes of Region 8, who had an average score of 74.75% on Syncro. The Fiona Baan award honors the memory of Fiona Baan, late USEF Director of dressage, driving, and eventing; USEF “I” judge; U.S. dressage team leader for the 1976 and 1992 Olympic Games, 1987 Pan American Games, and 1991 World Championships; and a friend and supporter of the NAJYRC.
Happening in conjunction with the Championships was the CEIY3* Endurance 75-Mile Ride. Jessica DiCamillo finished in first with her Arabian Mare Crestwood Premiere.
