International Bromont : Mario Deslauriers shines at the World Cup Qualifier!

July 31, 2025

Bromont – The 34th Edition of the International Bromont presented by CN ended its first week of competition with the 1.60m World Cup Qualifier, a $65,000 prize made possible by the support of Bonjourquébec.com. The World Cup Canadian League holds six qualifying competitions in Canada, two of which take place in Québec. The first event was held in Blainville, Sunday July 19. Today in Bromont, the stars aligned to offer a most brilliant spectacle! Many questions arose: would Mario Deslauriers meet the crowd’s expectations and take top honours ? Would Andres Rodrigues ride to a 2nd Grand Prix victory following Blainville ?

The atmosphere was filled with anticipation, as the 13 obstacles and 15 jumping efforts course designed by FEI recognized Venezuelan Leopoldo Palacios promised to be demanding. With many twists and turns between jumps, the riders had to be precise with their horses to keep within the initial time of 76 seconds, a time which would later be
adjusted to 80 seconds after first competitor Andres Rodriguez rode and incurred 4 faults with a fallen rail.

Twenty rider-horse teams took to the course, including Belgian Éric Flameng, Olympic equestrian Mac Cone, Beth Underhill, Canadian Champion Kean White, Mark Samuel, Ian Millar’s son Jonathon and Marie Hécart from France. Among the Québec natives were of course Mario Deslauriers with two horses, Angela Covert-Lawrence and young David
Arcand riding Santos Utopia, with his first attempt at this level.

David Arcand, the 6th rider on the course, almost had a flawless trip. Enthusiasm rose as he overcame each technical difficulty, but an unfortunate rail at the second to last jump would ultimately bring disappointment from the crowd. At this point of the competition, Arcand was still in 2nd place behind Andres Rodrigues. Mark Samuel, Beth Underhill and Mac Cone could do no better. Courtney Vince, the 11th rider to tackle the challenge, managed a flawless ride but drew a time fault for exceeding the time allowed by 37 hundredth of a second! No rider had yet to go clean when Mario Deslauriers stepped into the ring. Riding Ardèche Van de Zelm, Deslauriers gallops forward to the complete hush of the crowd. Tension rises as he jumps each fence clean and heads to the last obstacle… And it’s a fault free ride! Only six riders left to compete, and more questions linger: Will there be a jump-off? Will Mario Deslauriers have a repeat performance of his perfect ride with a second horse? But neither Beth Underhill with her 2nd horse Tjengo, Kean White, Paul Halpern nor Erryn Ballard would succeed in catching up to Mario. Riding his second horse Vicomte D, Deslauriers lowers a rail but still manages a remarkable time of 74.29 seconds.

At home in his kingdom, Mario takes top honours as well as 3rd position. These excellent performances net Mario Deslauriers precious points on the World Cup tour, with the finale to be held in Geneva in April 2010. David Arcand earned a very respectable 6th position.
