Faster wasn’t possible: Beat Maendli won the Grand Prix in Hagen a.T.W.

April 29, 2025

(Hagen a.T.W.) As if the Swiss are relaxed: 12 aces started in the winning round of the Bankhaus Lampe KG Grand Prix. Beat Maendli was the second last starter with Quanta Costa over the difficult challenge set by Frank Rothenberger – and the will to win was written all over both faces. No athlete had tried so far to be so fast, so racy and make such short turns! The clock stopped at 40.60 seconds and all the poles were still hanging. Now there was only the Japanese rider Taizo Sugitani and Avenzio still to start. This pair could also be very quick. The 32 year old rider hit the finish line in 40.64 seconds to take the second place. The luck was with the Swiss! The World Cup Final 2007 winner, Beat Maendli, was thrilled with his win in the class offering 30,000 Euros in prize money: “I haven’t been riding Quanta Costa for very long so it is extremely nice to be standing at the front of the pack so soon.” A young lady moved into third place behind Taizo Sugitani and Avenzio: The 25 year old Caroline Mueller and her Holsteiner Caretello finished in third place – the pair had been leading for quite a while. “Of course I would have been happy to win this afternoon, but I knew that there were very quick riders coming after me and you need a bit of luck to win.” Mueller has known Horses & Dreams for the past 8 years: “I was already here as a young rider. And we can all give the Kasselmann Family a compliment. It is incredible how this event has developed. We are all speaking from ‚Little Aachen‘.“

Double World Champion Franke Sloothaak was equally thrilled: In the Vesta Stahlservice GmbH Prize, the Youngster Tour Final, he jumped to the victory with the 8 year old stallion Nouma D’Auzey by Carthago. He was followed by Toni Hassmann with Dublin Z.

Top Class sport was also offered in the dressage ring: Hartwig Burfeind won the Championat for Professional Riders with sovereignty. He first won the Grand Prix with his 15 year old stallion Goofy de Lully, then took the second place in the Special and in the final with change of horses the 43 year old was able to show his skill. With his own horse, which is owned by the Swiss Breeding Association, and the two four-legged concurrences he came in on first place to truly deserve the title of German Champion of the Professional Riders. “This victory is very important for me,” smiled Hartwig Burfeind. “It is absolutely super to see all the German professional riders in direct competition.” The second place went to Johannes Augustin with Norblin in front of Sonja Bolz and her 18 year old Holsteiner gelding Cockney by Caretino.

Laura Bechtolsheimer piloted the 14 year old Mistral Hojris to first place in the Grand Prix Special (74.375 percent). Matthias Alexander Rath and Sterntaler UNICEF took the second place (73.958 percent) in front of Imke Schellekens-Bartels (NED) with Hunter Douglas Sunrise (71.875 percent).

Team Olympic Champion Heike Kemmer and her Hanoverian gelding Bonaparte danced to the win in the Grand Prix Kur. The judges gave her a 76.250 percent for the performance. The Russian rider Alexandra Korlova and her 19 year old Balagur finished the test with 75.950 percent and the second place.
Show organiser Ullrich Kasselmann was very happy after the five days of competition and 60,800 visitors: “We have set signals here for the equestrian sport but we also want to continue to improve. We are at the
limit from the size of the event, but now we will continue to work on the fine details.” And the horse expert already has plans for the last April weekend in 2010: The upcoming partner country will be either Brazil or
Turkey!
