Draft horses and cattle penners didn’t let rain deter the action at the Princess Louise Park Show Centre

June 4, 2025

Sussex, NB – June 4, 2025 – Once again the gentle giants took to centre stage at the Princess Louise Park Show Centre last week-end. Huge golden Belgians, colourful Clydesdales and powerful Percherons were shown in-hand and driven – in single carts, pairs, unicorn (three) and four-horse hitches – by adults on Saturday and youths on Sunday. Sponsored by the New Brunswick Draft Horse Association, the annual show is held to encourage the development of young drivers and to showcase the mighty breeds to the public. Judge Sherry Lewis from Cannington, ON, spent a lot of time with the youth entries – praising their enthusiasm and encouraging their endeavours. At noon on Sunday she spent over an hour giving a mini-clinic on conformation and horse health issues for the young people. Another draft horse show will be held at the end of September – sponsored by the NB Percheron Association.

At the same time the Southern NB Cattle Penning Club held an event outside in the Ronnie Wilkins Memorial Cattle Penning Ring. Thirty-two teams took turns sorting three of the same-numbered cattle from a herd of 21 with the goal of herding them the length of the arena and into the open gate of a holding pen – al in 90 seconds or less.

Coming up June 7th and 8th the Atlantic Canada Arabian Horse Association is hosting their first show of the season and the following week-end the NB Morgan Horse Association will host their first of two events.
