International Glory at the Spruce Meadow’s “National”
June 5, 2025
(SPRUCE MEADOWS, Calgary, AB): Competition took off at the Spruce Meadows “National” Tournament today. The best horses and riders in the world were competing at the highest level of sport, setting the stage for the championship week ahead.
The first feature competition of the evening was the 1.50M Enbridge Cup. First day jitters didn’t prove to be detrimental for the 15 horse/rider combinations able to solve the 11 obstacle course designed by Guilherme Jorge (BRA), as they rode their way to jump-off positions. Santiago Lambre (MEX) and his gelding Curant were the best of the clears in the jump-off, giving them a win to start off their week. Lambre was thrilled by the win, “I thought I was good for second or third place. I’ve never won first place in the International Ring, second or third but never first!”
The ATB Financial Cup hi-lighted the first day of competition at Spruce Meadows. The 1.60 M event saw 22 riders make their way around the expansive course. Beezie Madden (USA) and fellow American Lauren Hough were the only two who managed to clear all 14 jumping efforts within the time allowed to move on to the jump-off round. Madden was first to ride in the jump-off aboard her stallion Judgment, a Spruce Meadows veteran. Madden had a rail and would have to wait and see if her four faults held up as Hough made her way around the ring. Hough and her mare Casadora took a conservative approach to the round. The strategy paid off with a clear round and win in the ATB Financial Cup. Hough spoke of her mare’s ability to do so well at Spruce Meadows, “She’s coming off a three week holiday. She felt good and really confident because she loves Spruce Meadows. I hope that we can continue a winning streak through out the week.” If the past dictates the future, a winning week should be in the cards for the team who were exceptional during the 2007 Spruce Meadows Summer Series.
